Summer’s almost here, and cybercriminals know it. They’re sending out fake booking confirmations that look nearly identical to emails from airlines, hotels, and travel agencies. Even tech-savvy travelers are falling for it.
How the Scam Works
- Fake Booking Confirmation: The email looks like it’s from a trusted company—Expedia, Delta, Marriott—with logos, correct formatting, and urgent subject lines like:
- “Your Trip to Miami Has Been Confirmed! Click Here for Details”
- “Your Flight Itinerary Has Changed – Click Here for Updates”
- You Click the Link: It takes you to a convincing fake website that prompts you to log in, update payment info, or download your itinerary.
- Hackers Steal Your Info: Once you enter your credentials or payment details, hackers have them. If the link contains malware, your device could be compromised.
Why It Works
- It Looks Legit: Perfectly mimics real confirmations—logos, formatting, and familiar links.
- It Feeds on Panic: Urgent messages make people act fast without thinking.
- People Are Distracted: Planning a trip or multitasking makes it easy to click before checking.
Why Businesses Are at Risk
If your team travels for work, this scam can expose company credit cards, compromise travel accounts, and introduce malware to your network. One careless click from your travel coordinator could cost you.
How to Protect Yourself
- Go Directly to the Source: Don’t click links—go straight to the airline or hotel website.
- Check the Sender’s Email: Scammers often use addresses that look similar but aren’t correct.
- Train Your Team: Make sure anyone booking travel for work knows the risks.
- Use MFA: Even if login details get stolen, multi-factor authentication adds protection.
