Dropbox Passwords Is Shutting Down: What You Need to Know

Is your team ready for the end of Dropbox Passwords?
The service is being phased out, which means businesses must move quickly to secure and migrate sensitive information. Here’s a breakdown of what’s happening — and what you should do next.

Key Shutdown Dates

Dropbox is giving users a short window to prepare before pulling the plug:

  • August 28, 2025 (View-Only Mode): You can still see saved usernames, passwords, and payment details, but you can’t add new ones. Autofill stops working.

  • September 11, 2025 (Mobile App Closure): The app shuts down, though logins remain accessible through the browser extension.

  • October 28, 2025 (Full Discontinuation): All saved information will be permanently deleted. The dark web monitoring feature is deactivated.

Bottom line: by late October, Dropbox Passwords will be gone.

Exporting Your Saved Credentials

Fortunately, you don’t have to copy and paste logins one by one. Dropbox allows bulk exports:

  • Browser extension users:

    1. Click your avatar (bottom-left).

    2. Select Preferences.

    3. Open the Account tab.

    4. Click Export and confirm.

  • Mobile app users:

    1. Tap the settings icon.

    2. Choose Export.

Admins can also check employee “Password scores” in the console to confirm who still has active Dropbox Passwords accounts. Remind everyone to export before they lose access.

What About Other Dropbox Services?

Some may wonder if this signals broader shutdowns. Earlier this year, Dropbox Vault was also discontinued. However, the company has not announced plans to shut down other services at this time.

Choosing a New Password Manager

With Dropbox Passwords leaving the market, it’s time to find an alternative. Here are key factors to weigh:

  • Reputation: Look for established platforms with a track record of security and reliability.

  • Security features: Multi-factor authentication (MFA), encryption, and biometric logins should be standard.

  • Ease of use: A password manager should simplify life, not complicate it.

  • Device compatibility: It should work seamlessly across desktops, tablets, and phones.

  • Pricing: Free tools may be tempting, but paid versions often deliver stronger protection and support.

Why This Matters

Modern businesses run on logins — from ERP systems to vendor portals. A strong password manager isn’t just convenience software. It’s a frontline defense for protecting intellectual property, financial data, and uptime.

With Dropbox Passwords winding down, now is the time to:
✅ Export your saved logins.
✅ Select a secure, user-friendly replacement.
✅ Train employees on how to use it properly.

The right password manager is more than a tool. It’s an investment in security, efficiency, and peace of mind.
